What afternoon, tomorrow and tonight mean in Spanish scheduling
Spanish time words don't match English ones: "tarde" starts later than you expect and "mañana" also means tomorrow. This page helps newcomers read and set appointment times, shop hours and tradesperson windows correctly.
Terms used
- Tarde — Tarde means afternoon and early evening, from after lunch until about 20:00 to 21:00.
- Mañana — Mañana means morning, until about 14:00, and also means tomorrow.
- Mediodía — Mediodía is the midday period, about 12:00 to 15:00, centred on lunchtime.
- Noche — Noche is night, starting after dark or dinner, roughly 21:00 or 22:00.
- Madrugada — Madrugada is the small hours of the night, about 00:00 to 06:00.
Key rules
- Tarde: Tarde starts after lunch, around 14:00 to 15:00, so 12:00 to 14:00 is still mañana.
- Mañana: Mañana means both morning and tomorrow, so confirm the day and the clock time.
- Night hours: A las 2 de la noche means 2 a.m., in the small hours.
- Tradespeople: Small trades give a window, not an exact time, so confirm the day before.
Tarde starts after lunch, not at noon
Tarde means afternoon and early evening. It starts after the midday meal, around 14:00 to 15:00, and runs until about 20:00 to 21:00. So 12:00 to 14:00 is still mañana, even though an English speaker would call it afternoon.
If someone offers "por la tarde", expect anything from mid-afternoon to early evening. Ask for a clock time if it matters. Shops reopen for their afternoon hours around 16:30 to 17:00. "Buenas tardes" is the greeting from after lunch until dark.
Mañana means morning and tomorrow
Mañana as a time of day means morning, from waking until about 14:00. It also means "tomorrow". Context tells you which one:
- "Mañana por la mañana" is tomorrow morning.
- "Mañana a las 10" is tomorrow at 10:00.
When you book something, repeat the day and the time back: "Mañana, jueves, a las 10:00?" This avoids mix-ups.
Mediodía, noche and madrugada
- Mediodía is about 12:00 to 15:00, centred on lunch.
- Noche starts after dark or after dinner, roughly 21:00 or 22:00. "Esta noche" is tonight.
- Madrugada is the small hours, about 00:00 to 06:00.
"A las 2 de la noche" therefore means 2 a.m., the night that has already begun, not the following one. Check the date when a time falls just after midnight. Say the weekday as well.
Reading signs on shop doors
- "Vuelvo en 5 minutos" means the owner has stepped out. The wait can be 5 to 20 minutes, and sometimes longer.
- "Cerrado por vacaciones" means a holiday closure. Small shops, restaurants and workshops often close for two to four weeks in August. They usually reopen on the date shown, if there is one.
- "Cerrado por descanso del personal" means the weekly rest day.
- "Cerrado por obras" means closed for works.
Tradespeople give windows, not times
Plumbers, electricians and similar small trades usually say "por la mañana", "por la tarde" or "entre las 9 y las 14". They rarely give an exact time. Many will call or send a WhatsApp message shortly before they come.
Being 30 to 60 minutes late, or not turning up on the promised day, is not unusual with small trades. Larger companies, couriers and utilities give two- to four-hour windows and are more punctual.
Confirm the day before and keep your phone with you.
