Arriving in Spain during August, Christmas or Easter
How to order your first weeks in Spain if you land in August, around Christmas or at Easter, when offices, landlords and utilities are slow. It is for new arrivals who need to know what to start at once, what to book early and what to leave for later.
Key rules
- Police appointment: Request your NIE/TIE appointment first, because it is scarce and slows further in holiday periods.
- Housing signing: Expect landlord signing to slip by one to three weeks in late August and from about 24 December to 6 January.
- Temporary housing: Book somewhere that covers the whole closure period.
- Internet backup: Keep mobile data or a portable router until installation is done.
The short plan
Start the slow things on day one, and leave the non-urgent things until offices reopen. Do it in three steps: act right away online, book ahead, then defer.
Do this right away, online
- Buy a SIM card. It is the easiest task and you can do it at a shop or online straight away.
- Arrange travel and health insurance online.
- Request your appointments for the NIE/TIE and for empadronamiento. You only request them now. The appointments themselves may be weeks away.
The NIE/TIE police appointment is the most holiday-sensitive step. Appointments are scarce anyway, and they get slower in August and around Christmas and Easter. Request yours as early as you can.
Book ahead, as early as possible
Empadronamiento. Some town halls cut hours and appointments in August. Ask your town hall what it offers before you travel.
Your housing contract. In August (especially the second half) and from about 24 December to 6 January, many landlords and agencies are away or on reduced hours. Replies and viewings take longer, and signing can slip by one to three weeks. Contact them early and expect delays.
Temporary housing. Book a place that covers the whole period when offices are closed. This protects you if your contract slips.
The bank. Opening an account needs your NIE and an appointment. Ask for the appointment early, but expect the account to wait until you have the NIE.
Internet. Installation slots are often one to three weeks out, so order early. Keep mobile data or a portable router as a backup.
Leave until after the closure
- Switching electricity or gas. You can ask online, but anything that needs a distributor visit or a technician can take days to weeks longer.
- Water contracts. These usually depend on a local office or on your landlord's documents, so they can wait for the landlord.
- Furniture deliveries.
- Bank products you do not need yet.
- Any procedure that depends on having your NIE.
Keep copies of everything
Keep digital and paper copies of every document, so you can send them quickly when an office reopens.
Delays differ by city and provider. The timeline, checklist and questions below give the details.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a SIM card straight away if I land during a closure?
Yes, a SIM card is one of the easiest things to sort out, because you can buy one at a shop or online and use it immediately. Get it first, since it also gives you mobile data while other services are slow.
How long can internet installation take over the holidays?
Internet installation slots are often one to three weeks out, and they can be later around the holidays. Mobile data or a portable router works as a backup until the technician comes.
Which tasks can I safely leave until after the closure?
You can leave non-urgent tasks such as switching utilities, furniture deliveries and a non-urgent bank product until offices reopen. Procedures that depend on your NIE (your foreigner ID number) also wait. Arrange temporary housing that covers the closed period.
Can I sign a rental contract in late August or between Christmas and 6 January?
Yes, but signing can slip by one to three weeks, because many landlords and agencies are away or on reduced hours. Start contacting them early and expect slower replies and viewings.
