Paying the immigration fee (tasa, modelo 790)
How to generate, pay and prove payment of the immigration fee on modelo 790, including what to do if you are outside Spain. For non-EU applicants who need to attach a paid fee to a residence or work application or a TIE request.
Terms used
- NIE — The NIE is the identification number Spain gives to foreigners, used for tax, work, housing and official procedures.
Key rules
- Code: Use code 052 for residence and work authorisations and code 012 for issuing the TIE card.
- Receipt: Your receipt needs the bank stamp or the NRC, and it must match your procedure.
- From abroad: Foreign cards and transfers are refused, so pay with a Spanish bank card or through someone in Spain.
- Missing receipt: If you file without the receipt, the office gives you 10 working days to send it.
What you need to do
You generate the form, pay it at a bank (or online), and attach the paid copy to your application. Two fees use modelo 790: code 052 for the permit and code 012 for the TIE card; the amounts are on the fees page.
Choose the right code
The form has several codes. Code 052 is the processing fee for the residence authorisation, paid before you file. Code 012 is the fee for the TIE card, paid after the authorisation or visa is granted and before your fingerprinting appointment. With code 052 the form asks you to pick a procedure description, such as initial temporary residence, work authorisation, renewal or long-term residence.
Match the wording on the form to your application. A receipt with the wrong code or name can be rejected by the immigration office.
Generate the form
- Open the national police website and go to the fees section for modelo 790.
- Select the code and the procedure description.
- Fill in your personal data, including your NIE or passport number.
- Generate the form. Print three copies or save the PDF.
Pay it
You have two ways to pay.
- At a bank in Spain. Take the printed form to an authorised bank. The bank stamps and validates your copy. Some banks charge people who are not customers.
- Online. Needs a Spanish bank account or a card from a participating bank; not every bank takes part.
To pay online:
- Fill in the form on the national police website and generate it.
- Pay by card or bank account in the same session.
- Download the receipt that shows the NRC, the amount and the date.
What a valid receipt looks like
Your receipt must show:
- the filled-in form with your data and the procedure description;
- the amount;
- proof of payment: either the bank branch's stamp and validation, or the NRC with the payment date.
For online payment, the receipt shows the NRC, the amount and the date.
Paying from abroad
Foreign cards and transfers are refused, because modelo 790 is built for Spanish banks. You have two options:
- ask a person or representative in Spain to pay for you;
- pay online with a card from a Spanish bank, if you have one.
The national visa fee is paid at the consulate, not on modelo 790.
Attach the receipt
Attach the paid copy, the one marked for the administration, to your application. For an online application, upload it.
