How much money you must show for Spanish residence
Spain sets the money you must show as a percentage of two public indexes, different for each route and updated every year. The routes compared are the non-lucrative, remote-work, student, family and business routes, for non-EU applicants.
Key rules
- Index-based: Most amounts are percentages of IPREM or the minimum wage, so the euro figure changes every year.
- Route matters: Each route has its own percentage, and the entrepreneur and highly qualified routes have no fixed funds amount.
How the amounts are set
Spain does not name a fixed euro sum for most routes. It sets a percentage of a public index, and the euro figure moves when the index is updated each year. Two indexes matter:
- IPREM, a public index used to size benefits and funds tests. For 2025 it was 600 euros per month, or 7,200 euros per year.
- The minimum wage (SMI), Spain's national monthly minimum wage, paid in 14 payments. It was 1,184 euros per month for 2025. Only the remote-work visa uses it: 200% of the monthly wage spread over 12 months, which is 2,849 euros a month for 2026, higher than twice the 2025 wage.
The amounts in force on the day you file apply, so a filing in December uses the current year's figure and a filing in January uses the new one.
Amounts by route
Non-lucrative visa. As main applicant you must show 400% of IPREM per year, which is 28,800 euros at the 2025 IPREM, with 100% of IPREM per year added for each dependant.
Remote-work visa. You need income of at least 200% of the monthly minimum wage, which is 2,849 euros a month in 2026. The first dependant adds 75% of the monthly minimum wage and each further dependant adds 25%. This is income, not savings; how it is measured is on the income page.
Student visa. You show 100% of IPREM for each month of study, which is 600 euros a month at the 2025 IPREM and 7,200 euros for a year, plus 75% of IPREM per month for each family member who comes with you. Parents or a sponsor may provide the money: Can a parent, sponsor or gift count as your funds?.
Family reunification. Your sponsor in Spain shows 150% of IPREM per year for the household with the first relative, plus 50% of IPREM per year for each further relative.
Entrepreneur visa. There is no fixed indexed amount. Your business plan is judged on whether it is viable, and you must show enough funds to live on during your stay.
Highly qualified professional. There is no IPREM-based funds test. You need a job offer or contract with a qualifying salary or qualification.
Who counts as a dependant, and what each family member adds, is on Joint accounts, spouses and family: who must own the money.
If you are an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen
The indexed funds amounts do not apply to you, because you register under free-movement rules. You do not need to show the IPREM or minimum-wage figures for a visa. The same holds for UK citizens with Withdrawal Agreement rights.
Calculate the funds you must show for your household
The example is a main applicant with two family members applying with them: one first dependant and one further dependant.
| Step | Result |
|---|---|
| Non-lucrative main applicant amount per year | 28,800 EUR |
| Non-lucrative dependants amount per year (2 x 7,200) | 14,400 EUR |
| Non-lucrative visa: funds to show per year | 43,200 EUR |
| Remote-work main applicant income per month | 2,849 EUR |
| Remote-work first dependant per month | 1,068 EUR |
| Remote-work further dependant per month | 356 EUR |
| Remote-work visa: income to show per month | 4,273 EUR |
| Student visa: funds to show for a year of study, alone | 7,200 EUR |
The IPREM figure used is 7,200 EUR per year (2025).
