Applying for your residence card (TIE) after the deadline
Yes. In practice offices take late applications, and nothing happens to your authorisation. Your lateness is counted from the end of your one-month window (how the month is counted).
Key rules
- Late application: You can still apply, and your residence authorisation stays valid.
- Fine: A late application is a minor infraction with a fine of up to 500 euros, though a warning or a low fine is typical.
- First step: Book your fingerprint appointment today and keep evidence of any difficulty getting one.
- Sanction notice: Reply within 15 working days of notification; paying promptly reduces the fine by 20%.
Can you still apply?
Yes. In practice offices take late applications, and nothing happens to your authorisation. Your lateness is counted from the end of your one-month window (how the month is counted).
What decides whether you are fined?
Many offices accept late applications without any sanction, but an office can open a sanction procedure. Three things decide the outcome: how long you are late, whether you have a documented reason (no appointments available, with proof of your booking attempts), and whether you applied before the office contacted you. A short delay, a documented reason and an application made before any contact lead to a warning or a low fine; a long delay with no reason and a late reaction to a notice lead to a higher fine.
What to do first
- Book your fingerprint appointment (cita previa) today, at the police station or foreigners' office of your province.
- Keep proof of why the delay happened. If you tried to get an appointment and none were available, save screenshots or records of each attempt.
- Keep proof of the date you entered Spain, or of the date you were notified of your approval. It shows how late you are.
- Go to the appointment with your documents: the same as for an on-time application (list), plus the proof from steps 2 and 3.
Some offices ask you to explain the delay, so be ready to do that.
If a sanction notice arrives
Open it straight away and note the date of notification. You have 15 working days from notification to reply with your allegations, which means your written explanation of why you were late. If you pay the fine promptly, within that period, the amount is reduced by 20%. The procedure is explained in how a sanction procedure works.
