How to renew your residence permit in Spain
How a residence permit renewal is submitted in Spain: the online channel, the application form, the fee and the digital identification you need, and the order to do things in. For newcomers renewing a temporary residence permit.
Terms used
- Modelo 790 código 052 — Modelo 790 código 052 is the official fee form you pay at a bank before filing a residence permit procedure.
- Oficina de Extranjería — The Oficina de Extranjería is the immigration office in each province that handles residence permits.
- FNMT — The FNMT is the Spanish mint, which issues digital certificates used to identify yourself online.
- DNI — The DNI is the Spanish national identity card; an electronic version can be used to sign in online.
- Cl@ve permanente — Cl@ve permanente is a password-based government login that some online procedures accept as identification.
- TIE — The TIE is the foreigner identity card that shows your residence permit in Spain.
Key rules
- Channel: File online with digital identification, or have a representative or lawyer file for you with your authorisation.
- Fee: Pay the 16 euros fee before filing, and pay again for each separate procedure.
- Form: Form EX-00 covers most standard renewals, but some categories use a different EX form.
- Proof: Keep the bank-stamped fee copy and the electronic filing receipt.
How a renewal is submitted
You file your renewal online, through the Ministry's online immigration portal, using digital identification. This is now the main route. A representative or lawyer can file for you with your signed authorisation. Filing in person at the immigration office (Oficina de Extranjería) or a police office used to be common. Whether your province still accepts it varies, so ask your local office before you rely on it.
Which form you use
Most standard renewals of temporary residence use form EX-00. You can download it from the immigration section of the government's public administration portal. Some categories use a different EX form, so check which one matches your type of permit before you start.
The fee
You pay the fee before you file. It is 16 euros, paid on modelo 790 código 052.
- Fill in the modelo 790 form online.
- Print it.
- Pay at a participating bank, or online by card or account debit if your bank offers it.
- Keep the copy stamped by the bank. You attach it to your application or bring it to your fingerprint appointment.
Each procedure has its own fee. If you start another procedure, pay again.
Your digital identification
To file online you need one of these:
- a digital certificate, such as one from the FNMT
- an electronic DNI
- in some cases, Cl@ve permanente
Your TIE can be linked to a certificate. A representative files with their own certificate, not yours.
The order to follow
- Confirm which form your category uses.
- Get your digital identification working.
- Pay the fee and keep the stamped copy.
- Submit the application and documents on the portal.
- Save the electronic receipt it gives you.
The process, document list and checklist below walk you through each step.
File your renewal and keep proof of filing
-
Make sure your passport and current card are valid, you have a digital identification for the online portal, and your address is registered in the padrón: before you start
-
Check your pack: the form and fee payment are correct, every document is current, foreign documents are apostilled or legalised and translated by a sworn translator (traductor jurado), criminal record certificates are recent (usually under three months), income and health insurance meet your route's requirements, and you are filing at the right office: before you submit
-
Pay the fee on modelo 790 código 052 and keep the stamped copy: before filing
-
File your renewal online through the Ministry's immigration portal, or have a representative or lawyer file for you with your written authorisation: inside your filing window
-
Save the electronic filing receipt with its registry number, because it proves your filing date and keeps your current permit valid until the office decides: as soon as you submit
-
File inside the window: from 60 days before your permit expires until 90 days after it expires
-
Gather the application form (EX-00 for most renewals), a full passport copy, the paid modelo 790 form, your current TIE, proof of address or padrón where required, and the evidence your permit type needs, such as income, health insurance, employment, studies or business activity: before you submit
-
Deal with the Oficina de Extranjería or the police office of the province where you live, and ask for your filing to be registered; in-person or registry filing may still be accepted in some provinces: when you file
-
If the office asks you to correct missing or faulty documents, send them within the 10 days it normally gives. If the renewal is refused, read each stated reason, match it to a document, then choose between a reposición appeal within one month, a court appeal within two months, or a new application, which is often faster when the problem can be fixed: if your filing is rejected for form or refused
-
If your permit has already expired, file within 90 days after expiry. The application is admitted but you may face a warning or fine. After 90 days you must apply for a new authorisation instead of renewing: if you missed the window
Documents you need
Documents for filing a renewal
-
Application form EX-00 (Solicitud de autorización de residencia temporal), which most standard renewals use. Some categories use their own EX form, for example EX-10 for certain routes, so confirm the form for your category.

Quick answers about renewing in Spain
Can I file my renewal earlier than the normal window?
No, an application filed more than 60 days before expiry is generally rejected as premature, and the online system usually will not accept it. You then have to file again inside the window, so do not count on an early filing being accepted.
What does the filing receipt prove after I submit my renewal?
The receipt, called the justificante de presentación, proves the date you filed, and filing in time keeps your current permit valid until the office decides. It carries a registry number and works as evidence for work and travel within Spain. It does not by itself allow you to travel outside Spain, so ask the immigration office before leaving.
What address do I put on my renewal if I moved?
Put your current address, because notifications and your new card are sent or collected there, and register it in the padrón (the municipal register). If you moved to another province, you usually file with the office of that province. If you move after filing, tell the office and keep your electronic notification address up to date.
What happens to my old card when the new one is issued?
Your old card is generally handed over or cancelled when you receive the new card. At the fingerprint appointment take the EX-17 form, proof of payment, your passport, one photo, the approval resolution and the padrón if asked. You collect the card in person with the receipt about 30 days later.
