Should you join your school's parents' association (AMPA)?
Helps you decide whether to join your child's school parents' association, what it gives you socially, and how to sign up. For parents new to Spain who are choosing how involved to be.
Terms used
- AMPA — The AMPA is the parents' association of a school, a non-profit group that organises activities and represents families.
- Consejo escolar — The consejo escolar is the school council, where parents, teachers and staff take part in school decisions.
- Concertada — A concertada school is a privately run school that receives state funding.
- Hoja de inscripción — The hoja de inscripción is the membership form you fill in to join the AMPA.
- Domiciliación — Domiciliación is direct debit, where the fee is taken automatically from your bank account.
Key rules
- Voluntary: Joining an AMPA and paying its fee is voluntary, and a school cannot make enrolment depend on it.
- Fee: An AMPA fee is usually around €15–€40 per family per year, and each AMPA sets its own.
- Best fit: Membership tends to matter most at public schools and least at private ones.
- Timing: You can join in September or October, or later in the year.
Should you join?
Joining is your choice, and it is usually worth it if you want to meet other families and have a say in school life. If you only want the basics, you can skip it. How much you gain depends on your school type and how involved you want to be.
What an AMPA is
The AMPA is a non-profit parents' association attached to a school. It speaks for parents, can put parents forward for the consejo escolar, and links families with the school. In practice it runs extracurricular activities, early-morning care, parties and festivals, trips and, at some schools, a second-hand textbook exchange.
Why it is a good social route
For a newcomer, the AMPA is the most structured way to meet other parents. You meet people at events, in the chat groups and on trips, without having to start conversations at the school gate. Typical events through the year include:
- A welcome at the start of the school year.
- Christmas festivals and visits from the Reyes Magos.
- Carnival costume parties in February.
- Día del Libro on 23 April and spring fairs.
- An end-of-year party in late June.
Some events depend on region. The castañada, a chestnut party around 1 November, is more common in Catalonia, Galicia and other northern areas.
How school type changes the answer
- Public school: The AMPA is usually the main and most active parents' group. It runs activities and services and has seats on the consejo escolar. Joining is most useful here.
- Concertada school: The consejo escolar also has parent representatives, and the AMPA is often active. Its fee is separate from the school's own fees and activity charges.
- Private school: AMPAs are less common or weaker, because there is no mandatory consejo escolar. Their role is often mostly social.
Cost and what you get
Fees are set by each AMPA's own general assembly. They are normally charged per family, not per child. Some AMPAs charge extra for particular activities or trips. Members often get discounts on those, while non-members can generally still use school services.
How to join
Joining is simple and can be done at any time. Most families join in September or October, at enrolment or an opening meeting, but you can join later in the year. Ask the AMPA or the school secretary's office for the membership form (hoja de inscripción). Some AMPAs use an online form. Pay by bank transfer, direct debit (domiciliación) or cash. Then ask to be added to the communication groups, because that is where most news and invitations appear. The checklist below walks through the steps.
If you are unsure
Ask the AMPA what it runs and what members get, then decide. Joining does not oblige you to volunteer. You can stay a quiet member and still get the news and the discounts.
Checklist
-
Ask the school secretary's office or the AMPA which activities and services it runs, and which have a member discount.
-
Ask what the annual fee is and whether it is per family.
-
Get the membership form (hoja de inscripción) from the AMPA, the secretary's office, its website or the school noticeboard.
-
Fill in the form with your family and contact details.
-
Ask to be added to the AMPA's communication groups.
Frequently asked questions
Do AMPAs run anything for non-members?
Yes, non-members can generally still use school services, but some AMPAs give members discounts on their own activities. Check with the AMPA which activities have a member price before you decide.
Does the AMPA fee cover each child or the whole family?
The fee is normally charged per family, not per child. Some AMPAs also charge extra for specific activities, trips and colonias (school camps), so ask what is included.
Is the AMPA less useful at a private school?
Often yes, because AMPAs in private schools are less common or weaker and their role is mostly social. There is no mandatory school council there, so you have less say in school matters. Concertada schools usually have an active AMPA with parent seats on the council.
What social events can I expect an AMPA to organise?
Expect a start-of-year welcome, a Christmas festival, Carnival parties in February and an end-of-year party in late June.
