Spanish exams and certificatesArticle 1 of 8 · 8 min read
Which Spanish exam do you need: DELE, SIELE or an EOI certificate?
Helps you pick between DELE, SIELE and an EOI certificate as proof of Spanish. It is for anyone who needs a certificate for a job, university place, immigration or nationality, and shows how to decide by asking the institution first.
Terms used
- DELE — DELE is an official Spanish-language diploma run by the Instituto Cervantes, taken at one chosen level, with no expiry.
- SIELE — SIELE is a Spanish-language certificate covering levels A1 to C1 in one exam, valid for five years.
- EOI — EOI means Escuela Oficial de Idiomas, a regional public language school that in some regions teaches and certifies Spanish for foreigners.
- CCSE — The CCSE is the Instituto Cervantes test on Spanish constitutional and sociocultural knowledge, required for nationality.
Key rules
- Ask first: The institution that asks for the certificate decides which one counts, so check with it before booking.
- Nationality: Nationality applications need the CCSE test and the DELE A2 diploma.
- Results time: DELE results usually come about two to three months after the exam, while SIELE results come within about three weeks.
- EOI: EOI Spanish certificates exist only in some regions and schools, so ask your nearest EOI.
Start with who is asking for the certificate
The right exam is the one the requesting institution accepts. Ask the employer, university or authority which certificate it takes and at which level, before you book anything. Then use this rule of thumb: DELE is the safe default, SIELE suits short timelines, and an EOI certificate is a cheap official option where it is offered.
Do you need a certificate at all?
Often you don't. Most private employers judge your Spanish at interview, and for many jobs it is simply assumed. Certificates are mostly asked for by public bodies, universities, teaching and healthcare roles, and immigration or nationality procedures. When a job names one, it is nearly always DELE, sometimes SIELE, often at B2 or C1 level.
DELE: the safe default
DELE is an official diploma issued in the name of Spain's Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports and run by the Instituto Cervantes. It does not expire, and it is the one Spanish authorities and many institutions name. You choose your level before you register. If the institution names DELE, or you are unsure, take DELE.
Results usually come about two to three months after the exam. Fees rise with the level, are set each year, and the registering centre can add its own charge. Check the current fee with the Instituto Cervantes or your centre.
SIELE: when time is short
SIELE is offered on many more dates, and results come within about three weeks. It is one exam covering all levels from A1 to C1, so it suits you if you don't know your level. The trade-offs: the certificate is valid for five years, and it is less often accepted for official procedures. Check that the institution accepts SIELE before you book.
EOI certificate: cheap and official, but local
The Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas are public language schools run by the regions. Several regions teach Spanish for foreigners, up to B2 or C1, and issue a regional certificate at the levels they teach. Some regions offer it only in certain schools, and the exams are set by the regional education department. EOI is not part of the DELE or SIELE system, so confirm that your institution accepts it. Ask your nearest EOI whether it offers Spanish for foreigners at your level.
By purpose
- Work: ask the employer. If a certificate is named, expect DELE at B2 or C1.
- University: universities usually ask for proof of Spanish for courses taught in Spanish. They accept DELE, SIELE, an EOI certificate, or a certificate from a university language centre or the Instituto Cervantes. Some also take the Spanish Selectividad language exam, a Spanish school diploma, or proof of studies completed in Spanish. Each university sets its own list, so check its admissions page. A university's own certificate is not an official state diploma.
- Nationality: you need the CCSE test and the DELE A2 diploma, both through the Instituto Cervantes. SIELE does not replace DELE here.
The decision, comparison table, timeline, documents list and checklist below cover the rest.
Choosing between options
Which Spanish certificate should you take?
-
DELE: Take it if an authority or employer names it, for nationality, or if you want a diploma with no expiry. It is the safe default.
-
SIELE: Take it if time is short, you are unsure of your level, and the institution accepts it.
-
EOI certificate: Consider it if your region's official language school teaches Spanish for foreigners and the institution accepts a regional certificate.
Check what the institution asking for the certificate accepts. If it names DELE, take DELE; if it accepts SIELE and you are short of time, take SIELE.

How to choose:
- Nationality: Take the DELE.
- Spanish university: Check which certificates and minimum level your university accepts. SIELE is a common choice.
- Study or work in Spain, with a low-cost route: An EOI certificate may be enough, but confirm with the body that will receive it.
Each university, employer or authority sets its own list and minimum level, so ask them before you book.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Spanish certificate to get a job in Spain?
Usually no, because most Spanish employers judge your Spanish at interview and many jobs simply assume it.
Is a university language certificate the same as a DELE diploma?
No, a certificate from a university such as Salamanca is not an official state diploma like DELE. Many Spanish universities still accept it as proof of Spanish for courses taught in Spanish. Check the admissions page of the university you are applying to.
Does an EOI certificate count the same as DELE or SIELE?
No, an EOI certificate is a regional certificate and is not part of the DELE or SIELE system. Only some regions and schools offer Spanish for foreigners, at levels up to B2 or C1. Confirm with your nearest EOI before you enrol.
Which test do I need for Spanish nationality?
For nationality you need the CCSE test and the DELE A2, both from the Instituto Cervantes. SIELE is not the one to take for this procedure.
