Valencian certificates from the JQCV and how they compare
Explains the Valencian language certificates issued by the JQCV, the levels, how the exam calls and fees work, and which other certificates the Valencian Community accepts instead. For anyone who needs proof of Valencian.
Key rules
- Levels: The JQCV certifies A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2, plus specialised certificates such as administrative and legal language.
- Calls: Exams are normally held twice a year, and you register online during a short window.
- Substitutes: Catalan, Balearic and matching-level EOI certificates can stand in for a JQCV certificate.
- Fee: The fee depends on the level, and reductions exist for large families and similar cases.
Which levels the JQCV certifies
The JQCV is the Valencian Community's body for official Valencian certificates. It certifies five levels, named by the European language scale: A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. There are also specialised certificates, for example in administrative language and legal language.
Older certificates use older names. "Elemental" is the old A2 level, "Intermedi" is B1, "Mitjà" matches B2 and "Superior" matches C1. If you hold an older certificate, check which version it reflects before you rely on it.
Exam calls and fees
The JQCV holds exam calls normally twice a year. The spring call is usually around May or June. The autumn call is usually around September or October. Each call is published by the Generalitat's education department.
To sit an exam:
- Read the call and pick the level you need.
- Register online on the Generalitat's electronic portal. The registration window is short, so watch for the dates in the call.
- Pay the taxa, the exam fee, with the payment form the portal generates at registration.
The fee depends on the level. It is set each year, and there are reductions for large families and similar cases. Ask the JQCV for the current figure before you register.
Other certificates that can replace a JQCV one
You may not need to sit an exam. The Valencian Community accepts these as equivalent:
- Catalan certificates from the Generalitat de Catalunya (B1, B2, C1, C2).
- Catalan certificates from the Balearic Islands.
- Official Language School (EOI) Valencian certificates at the matching level (B1, B2, C1, C2).
- University degrees or courses in Valencian philology or Catalan studies.
- Valencian qualifications obtained in school, which can give exemptions.
The Generalitat sets these equivalences in an order that it updates from time to time. Before you rely on a certificate, check the current list with the Generalitat Valenciana's education department. The decision, timeline and questions below help you choose between sitting an exam and using a certificate you already hold.
Choosing between options
Do you need to sit a JQCV exam, or can another certificate do the job?
-
Use a certificate you already hold: You have a Catalan or Balearic Catalan certificate, an Official Language School (EOI) Valencian certificate, or a university degree or course in Valencian or Catalan studies, at the level required.
-
Sit a JQCV exam: You hold none of those certificates, or the level you hold is below the level you need.
If your certificate is on the current Generalitat equivalence list at the level required, use it. If not, register for the next JQCV call.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a JQCV exam cost?
The fee depends on the level you sit and is set every year by the Generalitat. You pay it with the payment form generated when you register online. Large families and similar cases can get a reduction, so check the current figure with the JQCV.
Can I use a Catalan or Balearic certificate instead of a JQCV one?
Yes, Catalan certificates from the Generalitat de Catalunya and Catalan certificates from the Balearic Islands are accepted as equivalent, at levels such as B1, B2, C1 and C2. Official Language School (EOI) Valencian certificates at the matching level are also accepted. Check the current equivalence list with the Generalitat Valenciana.
