Protecting your home pension record while living in Spain

Shows which home pension systems let you fill gaps or keep paying in from Spain (the UK, Germany and the Netherlands do; the US does not), and how to check your record first. For people who worked in another country before moving to Spain.

Key rules

  • UK time limit: You can normally fill a UK gap up to six years after the tax year ends, and the 2006 to 2018 window has closed.
  • UK Class 3: Paying Class 3 from abroad requires at least 10 years of UK contributions.
  • US: You cannot buy US Social Security credits from Spain.
  • Germany and Netherlands: Both allow some voluntary payment from abroad, but each has a fixed application period, so ask early.

Start by checking your record

Before you pay anything, find out what your record shows in each country where you worked. Only then do you know whether you have a gap worth filling. The checklist below lists the portals and contacts for each country. If online identity checks are hard to pass from abroad, ask by post instead.

Which home systems let you fill gaps from Spain

Home system Can you pay from Spain? How
UK State Pension Yes Voluntary National Insurance through your HMRC online account, or by contacting HMRC
German state pension Yes Apply to Deutsche Rentenversicherung
Dutch state pension (AOW) Only in limited cases Apply to the SVB
US Social Security No Credits come only from covered work

UK: voluntary National Insurance

You can pay UK voluntary contributions while living in Spain. There are two types.

  • Class 3 is the standard type. From abroad it requires at least 10 years of UK contributions before you left.
  • Class 2 is cheaper. It is open only if you were self-employed in the UK and meet the conditions. Ask HMRC which class applies to you.

Deadline: you can normally pay for a past tax year up to six years after it ends. The extra window for the years 2006 to 2018 has closed, so older gaps can no longer be filled. Rates change every year, so get the current figure from HMRC or the Future Pension Centre before you pay.

Germany

You can pay voluntary contributions into the German state pension from abroad. Apply to Deutsche Rentenversicherung. For most years the deadline is the end of the following year, so do not wait. First ask for the Kontenklärung (a check of your record) and the Renteninformation (a statement of your pension to date) to see what is missing.

Netherlands

Voluntary insurance for the AOW through the SVB is possible only in limited cases. You must apply within a fixed period after leaving the country. Dutch law also lets you pay for missing years. Contact the SVB soon after you move to ask which of these applies to you.

United States

There is no voluntary contribution system. Social Security credits come only from covered work and self-employment contributions. You can still check your earnings record and benefit estimate in your online account.

Other countries

For France, check your record on the info-retraite portal. For Spain, your own record is the informe de vida laboral, which you can get online with Cl@ve or a digital certificate. The timeline below sets out the order and deadlines.

Timeline and deadlines

  • Check your pension record or forecast in each country where you worked: before you decide to pay anything

  • Confirm you have at least 10 years of UK contributions, which Class 3 from abroad requires: before you apply to pay from Spain

  • Pay UK voluntary contributions for a past tax year: within six years after the end of that tax year

  • The extra UK window for the years 2006 to 2018 has closed: it ended on 5 April 2025

  • Apply to Deutsche Rentenversicherung to pay voluntary German contributions: usually by the end of the following year

  • Apply to the SVB for Dutch voluntary insurance: within a fixed period after leaving the Netherlands

Deadlines differ by country and change over time, so confirm the current time limit with each pension body before you pay.

  • Work out which past tax years are still within the six-year limit before you pay.

  • Request the Kontenklärung and Renteninformation from Deutsche Rentenversicherung if you worked in Germany.

  • Look up your workplace pensions on mijnpensioen.nl and your AOW record on the SVB site if you lived in the Netherlands.

  • Use the info-retraite portal to see your record if you worked in France.

  • Request your informe de vida laboral, your Spanish work history, from Seguridad Social with Cl@ve or a digital certificate.

  • Send a postal request to the pension body if online identity checks do not work from Spain.
