One trip, repeat visits or a longer stay?
Helps you decide how many visits to make before choosing where to live in Spain, and when. One trip can rule places out, but a seasonally extreme place needs a second season or a longer stay. For anyone choosing where to settle.
Key rules
- First trip: One visit is good for eliminating places, not for making a final choice.
- Worst season: Always include a visit in the hardest season for that place before you commit.
- Trial stay: Seasonal extremes, remote work, school needs, health needs or job dependence call for a stay of one to three months.
- Buying: Rent for 6 to 12 months before you buy.
One trip is enough to rule places out, not to choose
A single visit tells you quickly what you do not want: the wrong feel, too far from services, too noisy. It rarely tells you enough to commit. If the place is seasonally extreme, you need a second season or a longer stay before you make a final choice.
Visit in the season that tests the place
Pick the worst season for each place, not the nicest one. The timeline below sets out the order of visits. These are the months that work best:
- Coastal resorts: November to February, plus one visit in July or August to see the peak. Many bars, shops and some bus routes shut from October to April, and summer crowds can be several times the registered population.
- Big cities such as Madrid, Barcelona or Valencia: May to June or September to October show normal working life. Avoid August, when many locals leave.
- The south (Seville, Córdoba): include a July or August trip to test the heat. Otherwise go in March to May or October.
- The north (Galicia, Asturias, Basque Country): October to March shows the rain and grey. Northern coastal towns also swell in July and August.
- Inland and mountain villages: go in winter to test cold, isolation and services. These villages fill up in August with returning families, so August gives a false picture.
- Ski towns: these peak in winter, so a summer visit shows the quiet side.
If you cannot pick a worst season, April, May and October show daily life without extremes.
How to run each visit
Plan on at least two or three visits in different seasons, one of them in the worst season. Stay about a week each time. Include weekdays as well as weekends, so you see the town when it is working, not just relaxing.
To compare towns on paper, look up municipal population and tourist-flat figures from the national statistics office. Exact seasonal multipliers vary by town and year.
When to stay one to three months
A short trip is not enough in these cases:
- The place has strong seasonal extremes, such as a resort town or one with extreme heat or cold.
- You work remotely and depend on reliable internet.
- Your children need a school place and need to settle into the language.
- You have ongoing health needs that require specialist access.
- Your move depends on finding work.
- You are selling your home abroad.
In those cases, do a trial stay of one to three months, ideally in the hardest season.
Rent before you buy
If you plan to buy, rent first for 6 to 12 months. Do this before you buy or sign a long lease. Renting shows you the full year, the neighbours and the real costs, and it lets you walk away cheaply.
Timeline and deadlines
-
Make a first visit to screen places out: Before you commit to anything
-
Make a second and third visit in different seasons, including the worst season for that place: Before you buy or sign a long lease, about a week each, with weekdays as well as weekends
-
Rent first before buying: 6 to 12 months of renting before you buy
Frequently asked questions
Which month should I visit a coastal resort town?
Visit a coastal resort in November to February to see it off-season, then come back once in July or August to see the peak. Many bars, shops and some bus routes shut from October to April, so winter shows what daily life is really like.
When is May to June or September to October a good time to visit a big city?
May to June and September to October are good months to visit Madrid, Barcelona or Valencia, because they show normal working life. Avoid August, when many locals leave. For Seville or Córdoba, add a July or August trip to test the heat.
How long should each repeat visit last?
Each repeat visit should last about a week and include weekdays as well as weekends.
Does a remote worker or a family need more than a short trip?
Yes, remote workers, families with school-age children and people with ongoing health needs usually need a trial stay of one to three months, not just a short trip. Try to do it in the hardest season, and use it to test internet, school placement or specialist access.
