When to give notice, end your lease and book flights

Key rules

• Irreversible steps: Wait for the visa in your passport before resigning, ending a lease or shipping belongings.
• Travel: Book only refundable travel until you hold the visa, then pick a date inside the entry window.
• Housing proof: Reunification files need the housing report, non-lucrative and nomad files need an address in Spain, and employee and work-permit routes need neither at the visa stage.
• Buffer: Allow slack after the expected decision date, since decisions run late.

Hold off on anything you cannot undo

Do not resign, end your lease or ship your belongings until the visa is in your passport. A decision can be a refusal, can arrive later than the stated period, or can be sent back asking for extra documents. The consulate has 3 months from a complete filing to decide, and silence counts as a refusal.

If you must commit earlier, keep the terms flexible: a notice period you can time, a lease with a break clause, and travel you can cancel for free. If the visa is refused after you have committed, use the notice period and the break clause, and keep every reservation refundable until the visa is granted; the appeal clocks are in refusal clocks.

What the application itself may ask for

Some items are part of the filing, so prepare them without making a permanent commitment.

• Housing in Spain. Non-lucrative and digital nomad applicants show where they will live: a rental contract, a property deed, a hotel or temporary booking, or a host's letter. A lease for the full period is the strongest; see proof of accommodation. Employee and highly qualified routes rely on the work authorisation and need no housing proof at the visa stage. Family reunification needs the adequate housing report (housing report).
• A flight. Filing does not legally require one. A few consulates have asked for an itinerary; if yours does, choose a refundable booking.
• Proof of work. If you are a digital nomad, your employment contract or work history must show the employment relationship when you file.

Your employer's start date

If you are an employee with a Spanish employer, the start date matters because the work authorisation and the contract are tied together. Agree a flexible start date that allows for the decision time, visa collection and the entry window. If you work remotely for a foreign employer, the start date is generally not a filing factor.

Build a buffer around the entry window

The visa is valid for 90 days (entry window). Leave 4 to 8 weeks between the expected decision and your move, to collect your passport with the visa, finish affairs at home and book travel.

Once the visa is in hand, book your flight for a date inside the entry window, then give notice and end your lease to match.

If you are self-employed or a freelancer (autónomo)

Your filing rests on your own business, not an employer's letter or contract.

• Keep your existing clients and contracts running until the visa is in your passport. Ending them early removes your income while a refusal or delay is still possible.
