Key rules
- Carry your proof: Show the filing receipt or admission notice together with the expired card and your passport.
- Old date in the system: A wrong expiry date is fixed by showing your receipt at the health centre desk or at the TGSS or INSS.
- Driving licence exchange: A pending renewal usually does not block the exchange, but confirm with the DGT office when you book.
The short answer
Your rights do not stop when the date printed on your card passes. Health care, Social Security and tax procedures keep working while your renewal is processed, as long as you filed it on time. The problem is usually the old expiry date in a computer system. You fix that by showing paperwork, not by waiting.
Always carry three things: the filing receipt or admission notice, your expired card and your passport. The documents list below shows what else may be asked for.
Health card
Your right to public health care depends on being registered with your regional health service and on your residence or Social Security affiliation. It does not depend on the date printed on your tarjeta sanitaria.
The catch is that the card's validity is often linked to your residence permit. The system may then show an expired date and block appointments or electronic prescriptions.
To fix it:
- Go to the admin desk at your health centre (admisión), or to your regional health service office.
- Show your receipt, expired card and passport.
- Ask them to extend your registration.
How this works differs between autonomous communities. If your health centre cannot change the date, ask which office in your region can.
Social Security and other offices
Social Security (TGSS and INSS), the unemployment office (SEPE) and the tax office (AEAT) generally accept your receipt together with the expired card and passport. Your stay and work authorisation stay valid while the application is processed.
- Social Security record: If it still shows the old expiry date, contact the TGSS or INSS. They can update your data using the receipt.
- Taxes: Your NIF or NIE does not expire with the card, so tax filings are not affected.
- Digital certificate or Cl@ve: Registering may need valid ID. Use the receipt and your passport instead.
- Stubborn officers: Some officers ask for a letter from the immigration office (Oficina de Extranjería) confirming your stay is extended. Request it if you are refused. Practice varies by office, so ask for confirmation of what they accept.
Driving licence
A pending renewal usually does not stop you exchanging a foreign driving licence. Show the receipt and expired card at the traffic office (DGT) appointment. Some offices ask for the new card instead, so confirm when you book.
Exchange is only possible for licences from EU/EEA countries or countries with a reciprocity agreement with Spain. It often has to be done within a set period after you become resident, typically six months, so do not let a pending renewal make you miss it.
If you lose the receipt
Without the receipt, offices will treat your card as simply expired. See the quick answers below for how to get a copy.
Timeline and deadlines
-
Exchange your foreign driving licence: Usually within six months of starting residence in Spain, and only if your country has an exchange agreement or is in the EU/EEA.
-
Show the receipt and expired card at the exchange appointment: On the day of the appointment, along with your passport and licence. A pending renewal usually does not stop the exchange.
Documents you need
-
Filing receipt or admission notice for your renewal, shown together with your expired card and your passport at Social Security, unemployment and tax offices.
-
A letter from the immigration office (Oficina de Extranjería) confirming your stay is extended. Some individual officers ask for it.
-
For a foreign driving licence exchange: proof of residence in Spain (your residence card or equivalent), your valid foreign licence, your passport, a medical report, a photo and the fee.
-
The new residence card, if the traffic office (DGT) asks for it instead of the receipt and expired card.
Quick answers about a pending renewal
Can I exchange my foreign driving licence while my renewal is pending?
Yes, a pending renewal usually does not stop the exchange if you show the filing receipt and your expired card, but some DGT offices ask for the new card. Ask when you book the appointment which proof that office accepts. Also check that your country is in the EU/EEA or has an exchange agreement with Spain, and that you are inside the usual six months from starting residence.
Will the old expiry date on my card block my health care?
No, your right to public healthcare does not depend on the date printed on the card, but the system may still show the old date and block appointments or e-prescriptions. Take your renewal receipt to the admin desk (admisión) at your health centre, or to your regional health service office, and ask them to extend your registration.
Who fixes the old expiry date in my Social Security record?
The Social Security offices, the TGSS or the INSS, can update your data using your renewal receipt. Bring the receipt with your expired card and passport, and ask them to correct the date.
How do I get my filing receipt back if I lost it?
Ask for a copy from the office or channel where you filed. If you filed online, download it again from the Sede Electrónica or from Carpeta Ciudadana with a digital certificate or Cl@ve. You can also ask the Oficina de Extranjería or Subdelegación del Gobierno for a copy of your application and registration receipt. For a paper filing, the registro where you filed can issue a copy.
