Using Netflix, BBC iPlayer and other home services in Spain
Explains which home streaming and TV services work once you live in Spain and which are blocked. It is for newcomers who want to keep Netflix, BBC iPlayer or similar subscriptions from their previous country.
Key rules
- EU portability: It covers temporary stays only, not a move to Spain.
- Residents: Once you live in Spain, you generally must use the service in your country of residence.
- BBC iPlayer: Services from outside the EU, such as iPlayer, are blocked in Spain.
Streaming terms change often, so check each service's current help page for how it treats customers who move to Spain.
The short answer
Once you live in Spain, expect to use streaming services under a Spanish account. EU portability covers temporary stays only. Residents generally must use the service in their country of residence. Services from outside the EU, such as BBC iPlayer, are blocked.
What travels with you in the EU
If you hold a subscription in one EU country and visit another EU country for a short time, many paid services let you keep watching. This is called portability. It is meant for holidays, short work trips and similar stays. It does not cover a move.
What changes when you become a resident
When Spain becomes your home, your subscription should be tied to Spain. Services may check your location or payment details from time to time. If they find you are living elsewhere, they can limit or cancel access. The simple fix is to change your account's country to Spain. Do this in the account settings or by contacting the service. The catalogue will then change to the Spanish one, and the price may change too.
BBC iPlayer and UK-licence TV
BBC iPlayer is built for people in the UK and is blocked in Spain. Other UK catchup services work the same way. Check the service's own help page to see whether it offers any option for people abroad. Some UK broadcasters sell separate international versions of their channels. If you want British programmes, look at those or at paid services sold in Spain.
What to do before you move
- List the services you pay for.
- For each one, check its help page for what happens if you move abroad.
- Change the account country to Spain once you are settled.
- Look at Spanish services and Spanish-language catalogues as replacements.
Workarounds to avoid
Do not rely on pirate IPTV or tools that hide your location. They can break the service's terms, risk your account and expose you to security problems.
